Fulcrum Breaks Ground on Piggly Wiggly
Fulcrum Construction, LLC (Atlanta, GA) broke ground on a new 31,500 square-foot Piggly Wiggly Cost Plus facility in Oxley, AL. Construction should be complete in April, and the store is scheduled to open next summer. Click here to read more.

Danielson Named Newsmaker of the Year
Randy Danielson, President of Retail Construction, Tri-North Builders (Fitchburg, WI) was named one of the 2018 Newsmakers of the Year by Milwaukee’s Daily Reporter. Pinnacle Receives Community Service Award
Pinnacle Commercial Development (Point Pleasant, NJ) received a Community Service Award from the New Jersey Business & Industry Association. The award honors companies who have demonstrated leadership in finding solutions to pressing social or economic challenges. Pinnacle was recognized for renovating and retrofitting Toms River East Little League fields to make them accessible to the more than 60 disabled athletes in Little League’s Challenger Division. Pinnacle also regularly holds food drives and blood drives and recently collected $10,000 worth of sporting equipment for underfunded programs. Click here to read more.

Pinnacle Completes Extra Space Storage
Pinnacle Commercial Development (Point Pleasant, NJ) finished construction of an Extra Space Storage facility in the Bronx. The three-story building has 72,000 square feet and was renovated from its old life as a Wonder Bread factory.

Schimenti Completes Target Redesign
Schimenti Construction Company (New York City) completed renovations of the Target store in Brooklyn’s Atlantic Center Mall. The store’s redesign presents a dramatically different look, including major design improvements that aim to make the store more modern and customer-friendly, including the development of wider aisles in the children’s retail section to accommodate strollers and a streamlined checkout system. Click here to read more.

Pinnacle Commercial Development Inc. (Point Pleasant, NJ) has been named as a NJBIZ Fast 50 honoree. The program recognizes the fastest-growing companies in New Jersey that are making significant contributions to strengthening the state’s economy. Wolverine Building Group Recognized for Excellence in Construction
Wolverine Building Group (Grand Rapids, MI) was among the companies recognized by the Associated Builders and Contractors Western Michigan Chapter. At the 32nd-annual Excellence in Construction Awards, held last month in Grand Rapids, Wolverine was recognized in the category of Renovation/Addition $1-$5 Million, for its Blythefield Country Club project. Click here to read more.

Tri-North’s Tequila for Ta-Tas
Tri-North Builders (Madison, WI) hosted its fourth annual Tequila for Ta-Tas event in September. Proceeds from the event benefitted the UW-Madison Carbone Cancer Center's fund that directly supports Stage IV metastatic breast cancer research. Erika Cleaver, project manager at Tri-North and the event's founder and coordinator says, "We're once again honored by the outpouring of support we've received from local sponsors and attendees this year. Anyone that has known or loved someone affected by Stage IV metastatic breast cancer knows the physical and mental suffering that ultimately results in a tragedy. Westwood Expands with New Director of Operations
Westwood Contractors (Fort Worth, TX), has expanded the company’s executive team with the addition of David Kimberly as Director of Operations. Mr. Kimberly will be directly responsible for supervising the company’s project management team and the general field superintendent. He brings significant experience spanning more than 29 years in corporate executive leadership and management roles. Most recently, he served as Vice President for 11 years at a regional construction company in North Texas serving clients in the retail, commercial, healthcare and senior living, religious, and industrial and manufacturing industries. Retail Construction Services Help Build Inclusive Playground
Employees from Retail Construction Services (Lake Elmo, MN) were part of a group of community volunteers that helped install a new, inclusive playground at Lake Elmo Elementary School at the end of July. The school’s former playground offered few pieces of playground equipment that children in wheelchairs or walkers could access, even though Lake Elmo Elementary is a district cluster site for children with medically complex needs. The new play structure offers a series of ramps, a wheelchair-friendly glider, slides and swings, among other things to allow children of all ages and abilities to play together. Click here to read more.

Schimenti to Build Wegmans
Schimenti Construction (Ridgefield, CT) has been selected to build the new Wegmans flagship location in Brooklyn, NY. The 77,000 square-foot store will serve as the company’s 100th location and its first in New York City. It will be located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Wegmans is a regional supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts. Stores are designed to replicate the feel of a European, open-air market with aisles of fresh produce, artesian breads, imported cheeses, cafes and restaurant quality shops along with all the grocery, dairy, frozen, and household items usually found in a supermarket. General construction is scheduled to last 33 weeks and the store is scheduled for a Grand Opening in the Spring of 2019. Click here to read more.

Catlin Joins Schimenti
Ray Catlin has joined Schimenti Construction Company (New York) as Executive Vice President. Catlin brings over 23 years of experience in the construction trades to his new role with Schimenti. Most recently, he held the role of Executive Vice President with an industry-leading firm, building a regional office and leading a team of over 100 people in the Dallas market. Prior to that, he was lead point with that firm’s growth strategy in Sacramento, CA, helping grow that market. Catlin currently serves as RCA’s Secretary-Treasurer. Click here to read more.

Fulcrum Opens San Antonio Office
Atlanta-based Fulcrum Construction LLC is opening its first office in Texas, in San Antonio. Fulcrum’s headquarters are in Atlanta and the firm also has an office in Los Angeles. Samuel Joyner and Sonny Knox, who both have extensive project management experience in retail and office construction, will head the new office. Click here to read more.

CESO Opens Phoenix Office
CESO has announced the opening of a Phoenix office, marking the firm’s first West Coast-based location. This is the latest step in the ongoing growth and expansion for the firm. The new office will allow CESO to connect with their West Coast clients on a more personal level as well as showcase the firm’s services and expertise to a greater audience. Leading the Phoenix office is industry veteran Alex Ramon, who brings extensive experience in developing strategic design and architectural solutions for top brands. In addition to Arizona, CESO operates offices in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Florida. The firm employs a total of 175 associates providing surveying, environmental, civil engineering, branding, architectural, and interior design services to clients.

Denise Doczy-DeLong Selected for Sharapova Women’s Entrepreneur Program
Maria Sharapova, five-time Grand Slam tennis champion, in partnership with the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), announced Denise Doczy-DeLong, CEO, Singleton Construction, LLC (Canal Winchester, OH), as one of “The Spectacular Seven,” a group of female entrepreneur finalists selected to participate in the Sharapova Women’s Entrepreneur Program. The program kicked off in March 2018, with a nationwide call for applicants for the mentorship program.  Doczy-DeLong will participate in the 12-month, cohort-based virtual/in-person hybrid program that will include mentorship, peer-to-peer support, and mastermind and educational components to be delivered on a monthly basis by NAWBO and the Sharapova Business Resource Team. in a male-dominated industry. Click here to read more.

Wolverine Opens Popeyes
Wolverine Building Group (Grand Rapids, MI) completed construction on a Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen in Greenville, MI. The grand opening was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony hosted by the Greenville Area Chamber of Commerce. Click here to read more.

Tom Rectenwald Approved for Major Land Development
Tom Rectenwald Construction (Harmony, PA) has received approval from the Zelienople City Council for the “preliminary and final major land development” to renovate an existing structure and put in a restaurant as well as office space. Click here to read more.

PWI Upgrading Del Frisco’s in Vegas
PWI Construction (Las Vegas) is handling a $1.5 million upgrade to Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhous in Las Vegas. The construction will spruce up the dark wooded interior of the fourth traditional steakhouse created for the Texas-based Del Frisco Restaurant group. Plans include upgrades to the millwork, plumbing, electrics, removing and adding a wall, and some minor work on the exterior. Click here to read more.

JG Construction Breaks Ground on New Shopping Center
JG Construction (Chino, CA) is part of a team that recently broke ground on a new shopping center in Jurupa Valley. Shops @ Bellegrave is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of this year and will have two buildings featuring five tenants—including a Starbucks drive-thru, Waba Grill, Dentistry 4 Kids—within 10,000 square feet. Click here to read more.

Triad Completes Public Storage
Triad Retail Construction (Pearland, TX) completed a 250,000-square foot Public Storage facility in Houston. The facility is one of the largest, climate controlled self-storage facilities to be completed within the Houston Metro area.

Timberwolff Completes New Tommy Bahama Concept
Tommy Bahama recently launched what it calls a new restaurant concept—Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar & Grill—in the heart of Palm Springs. Timberwolff Construction, A Gray Company, (Upland, CA) built the 7,200-square foot restaurant, which includes a wrap-around patio that seats 180. Customers will order at a walk-up counter have their food delivered by servers to tables on an outdoor patio that seats 180. This is the first Tommy Bahama eatery of its kind in the state. Click here to read more.

Lakeview Working on Two Tractor Supply Company Locations
Lakeview Construction (Pleasant Prairie, WI) recently began construction of two Tractor Supply Company (TSC) locations, one in Clearlake, CA. The new buildings will be nearly 30,000 and 22,000 square feet, respectively. Store plans include a sales floor, external support service area and pet wash station. Fulcrum to Complete Retail Portion of Master-Planned Community
Fulcrum Construction (Atlanta, GA) is the GC for the 25-acre retail portion of Stevens Ranch, a 2,400-acre master-planned community in San Antonio. The site will consist of a 20,000-square-foot retail shell, which broke ground in February, as well as five one-acre pad sites and one 18.3-acre pad site. Delivery is slated for the fall. EMJ Opens Starbucks
EMJ Construction Special Projects celebrated the grand opening of its first Starbucks in Port St. Lucie, FL, in April. The project was completed on time and within the requested budget, despite challenges with municipality regulations. The team tackled a clay cap within a retention pond on-site to turn the project over to the client.  The project also received a Sunshine Safety Award during construction for the team’s consistent dedication to safe practices on site. This award, given by the University of South Florida’s Safety Consultation Program, was developed to motivate and support employers who emphasize safety through the implementation and maintenance of effective injury and illness-prevention programs. Click here to read more.

Wolverine Receives Governor’s Award
Wolverine Building Group (Grand Rapids, MI) was part of team that received a 2018 Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation for the transformation of the former Holy Family Orphanage into Grandview Marquette Apartments. Taylor Brothers Hosts Open House for Students
Taylor Bros. Construction Co. (Columbis, IN), along with other area construction companies, hosted two open houses to build interest among local high school freshmen to consider a career in the industry. About 80 students attended. Click here to read more.

Rockford Construction Wins National Award
Rockford Construction(Grand Rapids, MI) earned the National Excellence in Construction Pyramid Award for work on the Grand Rapids Community College Laboratory Preschool. The award, given at tthe Associated Builders and Contractors Excellence in Construction Gala in Long Beach, CA, honors both general and specialty contractors for innovative and high-quality merit shop construction projects. Schimenti Construction Expends to West Coast
Schimenti Construction Company (NY & CT) announced the hiring of Ryan Mourhess as the company’s Project Executive Regional Director, West Coast. Mourhess comes to Schimenti with 17 years of experience in the retail construction industry with almost all of it coming on the West Coast. EMJ Opens Publix
EMJ’s Chattanooga team celebrated the opening of Publix, a 45,600-square-foot grocery store, last month. Located in The Village at Waterside, the store includes a bakery, wine department, a full-service meat and seafood department, and a cooking demonstration station for Apron Simple meals.

In addition to Publix, EMJ’s team is constructing The Village at Waterside’s 120,000-square-foot retail space, which will be home to Burlington Coat Factory and REI, as well as additional tenants. EMJ is also performing the development’s site work, including grading, utilities, drainage, lighting, traffic signalization, paving, modular retaining walls, fencing, and more. EMJ Completes Sam’s Club Remodel
EMJ’s first Sam’s Club remodel, in Fort Worth, Texas, opened on Friday, January 12 following an extensive remodel. The project included interior and exterior demolition, renovation of refrigerated cases, offices, restrooms, showroom spaces and more, and construction of several new areas, including the hearing center, café, pharmacy and health care center. All work was performed at night, allowing the store to remain open throughout the remodel.

Engineered Structures Completing Target Remodel
Engineered Structures, Inc., (Meridian, ID), is completing a $1.4 million renovation on the Target store in North Kalispell. The store is expanding the toy and apparel department, adding four new self-checkout stands, retrofitting dressing rooms and bathrooms, and adding a new cosmetic department, and increasing the health and beauty section. The store will be fully renovated sometime near the end of March or early April. The renovation project is one of 1,000 similar projects Target announced last year as part of a nationwide remodeling to be completed by the end of 2020. The store is remaining open without any adjustment to hours throughout the renovation; the bulk of the work is being done overnight.

Shames Construction Awarded Dave & Buster’s Projects
Livermore, California based Shames Construction has partnered with Dave & Buster’s to build two new entertainment centers in southern California. One will be located at the Northridge Fashion Center in Northridge and the other at Del Amo Mall in Torrance. Both facilities will complement the existing centers retail with enhanced family entertainment. Each will feature a sports bar, restaurant, and gaming center. The interiors will include a mix of modern and traditional finishes like wood and stained concrete flooring. Completion is scheduled for early Summer 2018.

Lakeview Construction to Open Tractor Supply in Early Spring
Lakeview Construction (Pleasant Prairie, WI) will is constructing a 22,616-square-foot retail space for Tractor Supply in Mocksville, NC. The store plans include a sales floor, external support service area, and pet wash station. Construction has begun, with a goal of opening in early spring.

JG Construction Breaks Ground on Ramona Tire
JG Construction (Chino, CA) participated in the groundbreaking of Ramona Tire & Automotive Service Center's store no. 17 in Redlands, CA.
The 5,000-square-foot store will be located adjacent to the Mountain Grove center in the city of Redlands and is expected to employ 16 people. Completion is scheduled for June 2018.

Royal Seal Recognized by Dallas Fort Worth Airport
Royal Seal Construction, Inc. (Bartonville, TX) was awarded Concessions General Contractor of the Year for 2017 for Dallas Fort Worth Airport. The company has been building retail stores and restaurants in the DFW airport for 20 years. The awards was presented to Mike Sheneman, Royal Seal’s Senior Project Manager in charge of the airport.

Schimenti Construction Completes Hershey's Chocolate World
Schimenti Construction Company (Ridgefield, CT) recently completed a 7,800 square-foot Hershey's Chocolate World store in the heart of Times Square. The new Chocolate World is three times the size of the original attraction, which had operated for about 15 years at 48th and Broadway.

KBE Building Corporation has been awarded 16 new projects, including :

  • Demolition and ground-up construction of a new retail store at 250 Canal Street in Manhattan
  • Interior tenant fit-out work for The Main Event retail/entertainment venue at the Columbia Mall in Columbia, MD. and It’s Sugar at Harbor Place in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor entertainment district; KBE is currently completing extensive renovations to this high-visibility retail/entertainment center
  • A 78,588-square foot residence hall at Purchase College at SUNY, which will start construction in February 2018
  • A 140,000-square foot residence hall at University of Virginia in Charlottesville
  • A new two-story, 15,000-square foot addition attached to a 6,000-square foot existing building to be renovated, at American International College in Springfield, MA);

Wolverine Building Group Under New Ownership; Names New VPs
Wolverine Building Group (Grand Rapids, MI) has announced it is now under new ownership. The transition has been underway for the past 18 months and on December 20, Aaron Jonker and Curt Mulder became the fifth owners of the 79-year-old company. Jonker first joined Wolverine in 2007 as a project manager and moved up the ranks until he was promoted to co-president in 2016. Mulder has spent 20 years with the company, starting as an intern while attending Calvin College. They purchased the company from Mike Kelly and Dick VanderZyden. VanderZyden will serve as chairman for the next two years.

Wolverine also promoted three senior project managers to the role of vice president. Bill Pursifull, Jamerson Ries, and Troy Redman will all serve as VPs while continuing to oversee their current projects. Pursifull will be in charge multi-family pre-construction, Redman will oversee construction management and Ries will lead multi-family development. Ries joined Wolverine in 2012 as a project manager to oversee large multi-unit developments. Redman has more than 17 years of experience as a senior project manager. He started as a subcontractor for a developer, and in 2007, he became active in construction management. Pursifull has more than 22 years of experience in the construction industry and has been with Wolverine since 2006.

EMJ Supports Austin Hatcher Foundation
EMJ team members collected nearly $2,000 in cash and gift donations for the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer during the month of December. The donations were collected through Hatch’s Giving Trees in EMJ’s Boston, Dallas, and Chattanooga offices. Employees were able to choose an ornament from the trees and fulfill donation requests listed on the ornaments. Each ornament represented specific needs for children and their family members who receive services from Austin Hatcher. The foundation provides a variety of innovative services free of charge toward the mission of erasing the effects of childhood cancer and optimizing each child and family member’s quality of life.

EMJ Celebrates Grand Opening of PetSmart’s 1600th Store
EMJ’s Dallas office recently celebrated the grand opening of PetSmart in El Paso, TX; the store is the specialty pet retailer’s 1600th location. The EMJ team began work on the project in May 2017 and turned the project over to the client just five months later in October.
Work included the interior and exterior of the 18,000-square-foot store and all site work at the location.
