Singleton Construction Appoints Kennie Hatfield as President
Singleton Construction, LLC (Lancaster, OH) has expanded its executive leadership team, appointing Kennie Hatfield as President. Kennie brings to Singleton Construction more than 20 years of construction and leadership experience, having managed construction projects from prospect to closeout and leading the implementation of some of the nation’s leading retail companies’ successful facility expansion and renovation projects.

In his new role, Kennie will oversee workforce development, championing the firms’ efforts with Workforce Development Equity and Inclusion (WDE&I) and employee training programs. He will lead preconstruction activities and utilize his experience within operations to support that arm of the business.

Rockford Construction Puts Emphasis on Sustainable Construction
Running and active lifestyle specialty store Gazelle Sports has announced plans to open a sixth retail location in downtown Grand Rapids in 2022 and they are partnering with Rockford Construction (Grand Rapids, MI) on building out the new location. Michael Roop joins Westwood Contractors as Director of Operations

(Boise, ID) held a groundbreaking ceremony on October 1 in Garden City to mark the next phase of building at Parkway Station, a mixed-use, mixed-income planned neighborhood development with a mix of cottage homes, townhouses, apartments and retail, all within a quarter mile of the Greenbelt and Boise River. Brandon Nice Assumes Role of President of David A. Nice Builders
Brandon Nice has been named the new president of David A. Nice Builders, Inc. (Williamsburg, VA) assuming the leadership position his father held for 47 years. Founder David Nice will support from the sidelines and give the responsibility to his sons, Brandon, Vice President of Construction Operations since 2009, and Christopher Nice, Director of Retail Operations and Business Development, located at the company’s satellite location in Belgrade, Montana. David’s wife, Deborah, will remain Vice President, while their daughter, Kimberly Nice Woodroffe, will continue to serve as an owner consultant supporting her brothers and her husband, Skip, who serves as the company’s’ General Superintendent.

David Nice started the company from the dining room of the home he built in the Elmwood section of Williamsburg. He initially started out in high end residential construction before the company expanded in multiple directions. Nearly five decades later, the client list includes some of the largest national retailers in the country, Ralph Lauren, J. Crew, Barnes & Noble, SeaWorld, local municipalities, United States Government, valued developers, and many more. Today, David A. ESI Construction Building Charter School
ESI Construction, Meridian, ID, has begun work on Dubbed Elevate Academy North, a charter school specializing in career technical skills. The school is on track to open in time for the 2022-23 school year. The 36,000-square-foot project will include two connected buildings, a two-story Academy Building and a single-story Technical Building. The Academy Building will have 24,800 square feet of space, while the Technical Building will have just over 14,500 square feet. The school will serve around 310 students. When it first opens, the school will serve grades six through 10. An 11th grade and 12th grade will be added in 2024 and 2025, respectively. Click here to read more.

Bogart Construction Breaks Ground on Kia Dealership
The City of Indio celebrated the groundbreaking of a new Fiesta Kia dealership this summer. The dealership, built by Bogart Construction (Irvine, CA), is expected to bring 125 new fulltime jobs and a projected revenue of $60 million. The new 25,000 square foot dealership with service station is expected to open in the summer of 2022. Click here to read more.

Timberwolff Construction to Become Part of Gray West
Timberwolff Construction Inc., a Gray company, is officially rolling into the Gray West operation located in Anaheim, CA, after being purchased by Gray in 2014. The full integration will allow Gray to provide one, cohesive resource for commercial customers on the West Coast. “From the beginning, a deeper integration was always the intention,” says Bob Moore, president of Gray West and a past president of RCA. “The timing just needed to be right, and now it is.”Timberwolff brings more than 30 years of retail experience, including customers such as Petco, Gap, Sephora, and One Medical. Mike Wolff, also a past president of RCA, will transition into a senior executive role. The operation will maintain its office location in Upland, CA. “Since we became part of the family back in 2014, Gray has allowed us to grow our business while enhancing the benefits for our team members,” said Wolff, president, commercial retail, Gray West. “This deeper integration will enable us to further this mission.” Click here to read more.

Fred Olivieri Finishes North Branch Library
Fred Olivieri Construction Company (North Canton, OH) was the construction manager and contractor for a $1.5 million renovation of the 59-year-old North Branch of the Stark County District Library. The project took five months and is part of the district library's $6.5 million renovations of at least six its branches as part of its Re | Imagine campaign. The work on the North Branch, which is about 10,000 square feet and near Malone University, did not make any changes to the exterior walls or structure of the building. Click here to read more. 

Rockford Breaks Ground on Tech Company Facility
MCPc — a technology logistics, data security and endpoint management company based in Cleveland, Ohio — broke ground on a 51,000-square-foot facility on a new facility that will bring 75 to 100 jobs to the Madison Square neighborhood in southeast Grand Rapids. The building previously sat vacant for decades until MCPc signed a lease agreement this past April with Amplify GR, an economic development nonprofit in southeast Grand Rapids. Rockford Construction (Grand Rapids) will lead the site renovation, which will include “intensive” environmental remediation. Thirty percent of the project budget will be dedicated to the hiring of underrepresented local trade partners to complete the project. PWI Updates the Viceroy Santa Monica
PWI Construction (Las Vegas) was awarded a contract to renovate the Viceroy Santa Monica while the hotel remained operational. PWI’s superintendent for the project, Alan Meneou, noted, “Removing the existing floor was a big challenge.” The demolition process unexpectedly involved forklifts, bobcats, and jackhammers. “It took nearly a month to remove the floor and prepare the concrete slab to receive the new finish. Because we had so many other subcontractors working in and around the main lobby everything had to be done in sections.” Click here to read more. 

Thomas Grace Building Sephora
Sephora is on the way to the Kohl’s department store in the Shoppes at Bartram Park in Jacksonville, FL. Thomas Grace Construction (Stillwater, MN) will remodel 2,500 square feet within the Kohl’s store. In December, Kohl’s announced that it would add Sephora beauty products departments in 200 stores by the fall. Click here to read more. 

David A. Nice Selected to Build Fire Station
David A. Nice Builders (Williamsburg, VA) was selected by the Williamsburg City Council to demolish and rebuild a fire station, which will be replaced with a new 31,000-square-foot stationary. Demolition is scheduled to begin in early 2022 ahead of the new station opening in late spring 2023. Click here to read more. 

Engineered Structures Supports Mobile Clinic
Engineered Structures, Inc. (Meridian, ID) has donated a shipping container that will make its way to Mexico as a mobile clinic. Over two years, student doctors at Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine worked in their spare time to build a mobile medical clinic that features two exam rooms and a hybrid lobby/office area. The modular clinic will be transported to Lomas de San Isidro, Mexico. Through a partnership with Homes of Living Hope and Urban Mosaic, both nonprofit groups will assist in the transportation, relocation and implementation of the medical clinic to its new home in central Mexico. There, the container-turned-clinic will see approximately 1,000 patients each year and provide 300 families access to health care, the release said. Click here to read more. 

Gray Unveils Shrine in honor of Vietnamese Catholic Community
Gray (Anaheim, CA) is completing work on a $12.6-million shrine in honor of the Vietnamese Catholic community. Construction, which took almost two years, was affected by delays forced by the COVID-19 pandemic. The complex geometry and heft of the shrine demanded about three months of planning. Fearing for their lives, persecuted Catholics fled into the La Vang rainforest in Vietnam seeking refuge from a tyrannical emperor in 1798. They gathered each night at the base of a tree to pray the Rosary while hiding in the jungle. One night at the tree, they believed they saw an apparition — Mary holding Baby Jesus. The vision has become a powerful symbol. While the reported event took place more than 200 years ago, the tradition of Our Lady of La Vang is deeply entrenched in the Vietnamese Catholic community to this day. Rockford Construction Superintendent Featured in Business Journal

Rockford Prepares for MCPc
MCPc, a Cleveland-based technology logistics and data security company, is moving to Madison Square in Grand Rapids. Rockford Construction began demolition in April and anticipates breaking ground for the new building in July. MCPc is scheduled to move in 2022, and is expected to bring nearly 100 jobs to the local community. Click here for the full article.

Wolverine Building Group Acquires Southeast Michigan Construction Firm
Wolverine Building Group (Grand Rapids, MI) has acquired Contracting Resources Inc., a construction firm based in Brighton, MI. Contracting Resources Inc. was founded in 2001 by Jim Barnas, a 40-year veteran in the construction industry, who the firm after he spent time working for large construction corporations and recognized that he was ready to control and manage his own commercial contracting company. Barnas also wanted to operate in his hometown of Brighton so he could be more involved in the community. Over the years, Barnas built a strong book of business based on relationships, treating clients with dignity and respect, and always doing the right thing. Contracting Resources has 21 team members and offers construction management services to clients in health care, retail, religious, commercial, and medical office markets. Barnas will continue to work at Contracting Resources until the end of 2021 to ensure a smooth transition before retiring from the company. Wolverine is no stranger to acquisitions. In 1995 Wolverine Building Group acquired Fryling Construction, which at the time specialized in multi-unit residential and shopping malls. In 2009, Wolverine acquired Houseman Construction which led to work in the national restaurant and retail industry and has since managed projects in 38 states across the country. Click here to read more.

Fortney & Weygandt (North Olmsted, OH) announced some of their recent projects in the spring issue of their Forum newsletter. The company continues to work closely with CVS Health on the conversion of their stores into Health Hubs, with many more in the pipeline across the U.S. They have welcomed Meijer grocery stores as a client with a few regional projects underway. A new Huntington National Bank is underway in Pittsburgh, PA and a new Valvoline Instant Oil Change is starting in Rocky River, OH. Fortney & Weygandt is working on a a new American Family Care project in Hamilton, NJ and continues to build new office locations for Lifestance in Ohio and Indiana. They are also starting construction on several new Arby’s locations in Ohio as they continue to grow. 

Rockford Construction Announces Steven Frederickson as Vice President
Rockford Construction (Grand Rapids, MI), has announced that Steven Frederickson will join the company as vice president overseeing its health care division. Frederickson will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with health care clients and will oversee the company’s projects within the health care division. As health care institutions face new challenges post-COVID, Rockford’s health care team under Frederickson will focus on new innovations that support models for research and development, more effective patient experiences, and better health outcomes. Click here to read more. 

KBE Starts Work on Cambria Hotel
KBE Building Corporation has begun work on the future Cambria Hotel in New Haven CT. KBE has selected the large steel and concrete contractors for a six-story hotel that will complete development of the “Route 34 West” superblock. They will now be selecting subcontractors that fulfill city expectations of minority hiring. Schimenti Names New VP, Development
Schimenti Construction Company (New York City) has named James Harrison as Vice President, Development. Harrison will be responsible for delivering Schimenti's strategic plan, focusing on front-end pre-construction services, marketing and communications, customer relationship management, and new business development. With 16 years of international experience in construction management advisory, Harrison has reshaped and driven strategic planning and service delivery for brands such as Apple, Tiffany & Co., and Tishman & Speyer.

ESI Acquires Morgan Construction
ESI Construction (Meridian, ID) has merged with Morgan Construction Inc., a general contracting company that focuses on medical, dental, retail and light industrial projects “This merger of two great companies allows ESI an exciting opportunity to support already established clients and new clients on exciting projects by enhancing our efficiency and response to a broader market. Idaho is our home and we want to be able to serve all communities throughout the Gem State as we grow together,” said Neil Nelson, president and co-owner of ESI, in a press release. Following the sale, the owners of Morgan Construction, Matt and Lynne Morgan, announced a donation to the non-profit Building Hope Today in the amount of $250,000. PWI Takes on Hotel Projects
PWI Construction (Las Vegas) has joined The Ritz-Carlton, Paradise Valley at The Palmeraie as general contractor for the luxury resort’s interior build-out by the project’s owner, Five Star Development. As the first new Ritz-Carlton to be built in North America in over a decade and the centerpiece of the $2 billion, 122-acre luxury master-planned development of The Palmeraie, The Ritz-Carlton, Paradise Valley is positioned to become a flagship property for The Ritz-Carlton brand. The Ritz-Carlton, Paradise Valley will feature 215 hotel rooms with private entrances, detached casitas, and oversized suites spread across 20 verdant acres. Click here to read more.

The Sheraton Denver Downtown has revealed a $80 million renovation, including a full-scale renovation of its guest rooms, lobby, public and meeting spaces. Stefan Figley joins Westwood Contractors as CEO
Westwood Contractors announced the addition of Stefan Figley as Chief Executive Officer, a role he officially assumed on December 7, 2020. Robert D. ICI Starting Construction on Porsche Dealership
ICI (Elmhurst, IL) is commencing construction on the Napleton Porsche Chicago dealership located within the Presidential Towers development. The new dealership will contain 10,000 square feet of sales space and a 17,000 square foot service department. Wolverine and Rockford Join New Community Transformation Fund
Rockford Construction and Wolverine Building Group, both of Grand Rapids, MI, are part of the New Community Transformation Fund, a West Michigan venture capital fund that intends to invest in growing, minority-owned businesses. The New Community Transformation Fund netted $8.5 million in commitments from investors in its first year and ultimately hopes to raise $25 million through 2021 to support minority entrepreneurs. Click here to read more.

Wolverine Partners with Literacy Center of West Michigan for Education Grant
Wolverine Building Group (Grand Rapids, MI) is part of a community partnership that submitted an application to the U.S. Department of Education’s Rethink Adult Ed Challenge on behalf of the Literacy Center of West Michigan. The nonprofit is one of five finalists from the state, and the only one in the West Michigan region that is advancing to the next round, with the opportunity to win a share of $750,000. The grand prize will be $250,000 and up to five runners-up will receive at least $100,000. The Challenge aims to advance pre-apprenticeship programs and career opportunities nationwide by breaking down barriers many adult learners are faced with. Fulcrum Working with CapRock on Industrial Park
Fulcrum Construction (Atlanta, GA) is joining a team assembled by CapRock Partners to build a multi-building industrial park in southwest Las Vegas. The three-building industrial park, totaling 230,000 square feet, will include a 132,450-square-foot building with 28-foot clear heights, five grade-level doors and 26 dock-high doors; a 75,836-square-foot building with 24-foot clear heights, five grade-level doors and 22 dock-high doors; and a 21,976-square-foot “jewel box” building with 24-foot clear heights, one grade-level door and two dock-high doors. Click here to read more.
